Sydney Skin Cancer

Some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world are in Sydney. Skin cancer is usually the result of a combination of overexposure of ultraviolet radiation and a susceptible skin type. It is a no-brainer then that if you are fair skinned and live in Sydney you should be on a first name basis with your dermatologist.

It is estimated that 1000 Australians die from skin cancer every year and 2 out of 3 Australians will develop skin cancer. Australia has the highest skin cancer rate as a result of its latitude and because there are so many people who have susceptible type of skin.

The primary risk factors for skin cancer are skin type and exposure to UV radiation. People who freckle or burn as opposed to getting a tan and have red or blond hair are at a higher risk. It should be noted however, that exposure to UV radiation can also result in skin cancers among people who have darker skin.

People who live in Europe, Israel, and the southern United States also have very high rates and thus are not excluded from the risk categories.

The reason the rates aren’t as high in Israel as they are in Australia is because there are fewer Israelis who have very light complexions. The rates in Israel and Scandinavia are similar since most Scandinavians have a more susceptible skin type, but they are exposed to less UV radiation in their country.

So take heed of you are fair skinned and live in Sydney. Skin cancer is an ever present danger that you should be very aware of.
